SPOILERS The Mandalorian Season 3 Discussion

Haven't seen the latest episode yet but like I said before - there really didn't need to be a 3rd series and its starting to show.

Memberberries and distractions keeping the season arc dragging at a snails pace.

There is no season arc, so what's left? Fan service and cameos. I thought this season's arc would be Mando's quest to redeem himself by bathing in the waters of Lake Minnetonka Mandalore but no, over and done with in I think the 1st episode?! Oh, ok so maybe it'll be Mando having to battle Bo Katan for the thro---oh...nope, she's suddenly decided that "This" really is the way, after seeing what might be a mythasaur in a muddy lake. That's like Leah Remini getting back into Scientology after watching E.T. Right...so Bo Katan (anyone else always hear her name as 'Boca Tan?' Like she went to Florida and got a real nice colour. Anyway..so she's on board with everything Mandalorian now and maybe this Gorian Shard - who looks like Oscar the Grouch's nut sack - will be this seasons villa---oh...nope, he's dead... Maybe this gets addressed in the latest episode but... how do you do an extraction in space?

As I say, haven't seen the latest episode yet and I've managed to watch so far through some heavily rose tinted glasses, just enjoying having more Mando to watch but I think that's starting to wear off now.

Why do they keep doing this? Shades of BOBF - splurging any scraps of a strong story in one episode and then moving on to some other rubbish in the next.

This one was pretty terrible. The cameos were obnoxious. I literally fell asleep watching it. Very underwhelming. I’m super tired of stupid side quests and a weak story.

Also, is it a thing that all Ugnaughts speak like that? (I have spoken). I don’t know enough lore but it’s like they took an interesting element of Kuil and applied it to the entire species as a needless call back. As if to say “hey! Remember that ugnaught from series 1!?” Why does all media now have to treat its audience like they’re babies with zero ability to recall anything? Why is nuance dead? I feel like this is a problem with Star Wars overall though. They take a small detail and extrapolate it out because it’s easier than coming up with your own small details. It’s kind of the same as what they did to Boba in the prequels - They took the most interesting, mysterious character and made him…a clone. 1 of literally millions.

If it is canon that all ugnaughts speak like that then ignore the above obviously.

Overall - nothing happened in this episode. Nothing was changed by the end of it, and the plot of the episode did nothing to further anyone’s story. The two major points were - Din & Bo finding the mercenaries for…reasons, and Bo getting the darksaber. That’s fine but Literally everything in between was pointless. I don’t think it would have been that bad an episode if it was in season 1 to be honest because 1 was a lot more episodic in nature. It had more of an “adventures of Mando” vibe and by now Din should have his own motivations and arc but he just doesn’t.

S3E7 Chapter 23 The Spies

First Impressions:

I think that this was the most visually stunning, action packed, linear story progression and enjoyable episode of The Mandalorian Season 3 yet - possibly the season's best. As far as Mando episodes go, I'd give it an 9/10. Probably one of my top 3 episodes of The Mandalorian ever.

Costumes:

I really enjoyed dozens of costumes in this episode. Hands down the best costumes of the season!

However, the costumes of the covert tribe of Mandos continues to look so bad in comparison to Night Owls and others. I hope they either all die or get a fresh paint job.

The Night Owls still look GREAT. And the bigger dude has the best XXL Mando costume I've ever seen. Super clean design.

Axe Woves has a great costume. The helmet has really grown on me.

The-Mandalorian-S3-Ch23-8.png

Remnant Mandalorians - love the leader's costume. Almost 1313-ish, but more remnant and beat up. The slash on the face of his helmet and his scar are sick.

The-Mandalorian-S3-Ch23-17.png

Imperial Beskar Supertroopers! Right gauntlet has keypad and rocket like Boba Fett's left gauntlet. Ammo belt. Look very much like Ralph McQuarrie concept art mixed with the First Order Stormtroopers.

Moff Gideon Mandalorian - wish we would have had a more clear look at the costume, but daaaaang this was sick! His helmet was very Mauldalorian with spikes, dark red cheeks and visor. His flight suit was very much like Vader's suit and the left sided chest lights, very much like Boba Fett's. Knee dart launchers too. Great mash up.

Favorite Moments:

Moff Gideon and the Shadow Council of Imperials was awesome. Love that his base in on Mandalore the whole time!

The-Mandalorian-S3-Ch23-0.png

The shout-out to Grand Admiral Thrawn by Captain Pellaeon was perfect.

The-Mandalorian-S3-Ch23-1.png

Bo Katan admits that she surrendered to Moff Gideon and gave him the Darksaber. I thought this was important to the transition and growth of her character. Admitting her weaknesses and mistakes.

The-Mandalorian-S3-Ch23-10.png

"Are you Death Watch?" - Love the shout out to DW and the answer.

"You were right, I was selfish." Again, more growth in Bo's character. Admitting her faults and growing.

"To be honest, it means nothing to me or my people. Nor does station or blood line. What means more to me is honor, loyalty and character. These are the reasons I serve you Lady Kryze. Your song is not yet written. I will serve you until it is." Loved this perspective by Din. He's either going to be her knight or her love interest based on how she is looking at him.

The-Mandalorian-S3-Ch23-11.png

The Armorer and Bo Katan making decisions together was another leap for both of their character development. They've abandoned their stubborn mindsets and have embraced more of a joint leadership and unified command.

The-Mandalorian-S3-Ch23-12.png

IG-12/Grogu stops the fight between Axe Woves and Paz Vizsla. "No. No. No. No." I like that they respect Grogu intervening.

The-Mandalorian-S3-Ch23-13.png

The fleet above the planet looked great. I love the mythosaur skull they painted on the imperial ship.

The-Mandalorian-S3-Ch23-14.png

The sea of glass was beautiful.

The-Mandalorian-S3-Ch23-15.png

And the exploding ship with flying mandos was sick!

The-Mandalorian-S3-Ch23-16.png

"Those aren't Mandalorians." Army of supertroopers flying in!

The-Mandalorian-S3-Ch23-18.png

Mandalore Imperial Base with Tie Interceptors hanging vertically.

The-Mandalorian-S3-Ch23-20.png

Din's flamethrower was the best it's looked so far!

The-Mandalorian-S3-Ch23-23.png

"Mandalore will live on, in me." It seems like Gideon actually may want the Dark Saber to rule Mandalore?

The-Mandalorian-S3-Ch23-24.png

Paz Vizsla vs the Praetorian Guards

The-Mandalorian-S3-Ch23-37.png

Funny Moments:

"Bad baby. No squeezie!" This humor didn't bug me at all. I actually really liked it.

The-Mandalorian-S3-Ch23-5.png

"No." I am totally cool if Grogu uses IG-12 to talk, fight, etc. The thing that was once sent to kill him has been redeemed and made into something that makes him better and stronger.

I cringe when watching this show now. Too many awkward moments and some weird pacing.

Some of the speeches especially at the “Shadow Council” were awful.

Why do people keep saying “Mandalorian(s)” so much.

Decisions made too get me frustrated. Why didn’t Bo cut the door open to get to Din, how come Beskar can resist lightsabers, lightsabers can deflect praetorian weapons in TLJ, but the praetorian can now cut through Beskar without much trouble.

It’s all flashy and nice looking, but ultimately very predictable.

Those are fair points. I think the series is made for the less critical, more casual consumer than most of us.

It’s still night and day better than the tragedy that was the Book of Boba Fett.

I’ve just adjusted my expectation scale and try to enjoy it from the perspective of it being a live action Star Wars tv show for casual content consumers.

Andor is the only hope we have of a more gritty and consequential, mature version of Star Wars.

S3E8 Chapter 24 The Return

First Impressions:

I think that this doubles down on the last episode and continues to offer the most visually stunning and action packed episode of The Mandalorian across all seasons.

However, despite this having the best visuals, fights and being action packed - I felt it lacked any emotional pull or tension. I sat back after watching it a couple of times and said, "yeah, that's cool but I didn't feel moved emotionally - at all." It felt like it did far less than the last episode emotionally. It was too rushed to feel anything.

After the first viewing, I was super disappointed and underwhelmed. Probably because of the interview responses given by the cast and crew members this past week at SWC and online. I was expecting a major character death, but now I think they were talking about Paz during the last episode and got mixed up?

As far as Mando episodes go, visually I'd give it an 10/10, fighting wise a 9/10, for the story a 7/10, but only a 3/10 for how it was done with pacing and a lack of tension or emotional pull.

It was probably still one of my top 5 episodes of The Mandalorian ever, but a missed opportunity for so much cool stuff. And there was no lead into Ashoka what-so-ever?! That was SHOCKING.

Best Visuals:

The "Go Pro" style shots like this were awesome. I love seeing angles from their perspective.

The shots like this from inside the ships were great.

I loved the close-ups while the mandos were flying into battle.

Another beautiful shot of Din with the Ties hanging like bats.

Firefox_Screenshot_2023-04-19T18-03-06.690Z.png

Seeing the Imperial starship coming down as the mandos flew out was epic.

Firefox_Screenshot_2023-04-19T18-18-08.734Z.png

Moff Gideon being consumed by flames was quite the visual too!

Firefox_Screenshot_2023-04-19T18-21-05.993Z.png

As well as Grogu protecting Din and Bo.

Firefox_Screenshot_2023-04-19T18-22-26.692Z.png

The Mandalorian baptism scene and the lighting of the Great Forge also looked incredible.

Costumes:

The costumes were fantastic overall. I really like the leader of the remnant mandos like a mentioned last week.

Favorite Moments:

The fight scene brutality was much better. How many times can mando get wrecked by a flamethrower lol...? Him turning it onto another trooper was sick though!

Firefox_Screenshot_2023-04-19T17-31-24.586Z.png

The mandalorians jumping out of the Imperial ship into the Gauntlet ships was straight gangster. I love how rough the landings were.

Firefox_Screenshot_2023-04-19T17-38-46.786Z.png

Just straight up violently sliding up the ramp haha...

Firefox_Screenshot_2023-04-19T17-40-17.625Z.png

Din roasting again... I get that their suits are probably fire resistant, but goodness he's been cooked so many times.

Firefox_Screenshot_2023-04-19T18-04-59.281Z.png

The fight with the Praetorian Guards was interesting. In Book of Boba Fett, Paz puts up quite a fight with Din. Paz got whopped by these guys, then Din whoops on them pretty good... I know Grogu helped out, but it still seemed like they were taken out too easily. This was an opportunity for more tension and the possibility of Din being seriously injured or killed to sink into our minds, but I felt no tension or fear for him.

Firefox_Screenshot_2023-04-19T18-08-35.527Z.png

However, when Grogu got into the fight and the guards followed him, I was concerned for the first time that he might get wrecked.

Firefox_Screenshot_2023-04-19T18-13-39.576Z.png

The fight between Moff Gideon and Bo-Katan was great. Seeing her use the Darksaber was satisfying.

Firefox_Screenshot_2023-04-19T18-11-47.648Z.png

Seeing the Darksaber get crushed was a surprise for sure! An ancient weapon smashed in seconds...

Firefox_Screenshot_2023-04-19T18-16-43.575Z.png

Perhaps, we may even get to see Din get back to some legit bounty hunting for a while. With Grogu actually being worth his weight instead of just a liability. Would be great if they could actually write an appealing story about it though.

Firefox_Screenshot_2023-04-19T18-31-06.535Z.png

Seeing Din and Grogu's house on Nevarro reminded me of Obi-Wan Kenobi's house on Tatooine. Seeing the N1 parked out back is sweet.

Firefox_Screenshot_2023-04-19T18-33-19.327Z.png

This reminds me of the Season 1 planet Sorgan. All he needs is his lady friend.

Firefox_Screenshot_2023-04-19T18-33-59.600Z.png

Firefox_Screenshot_2023-04-19T18-34-52.176Z.png

Funny Moments:

I liked the Mouse Droids surrounding R5.

Firefox_Screenshot_2023-04-19T17-45-28.142Z.png

Terrible Moments:
How could they end like this? Straight Looney Tunes style... It makes it feel like a cartoony joke.

Firefox_Screenshot_2023-04-19T18-35-27.031Z.png

They’re so inconsistent with their own rules.

Gideon sounds like Iron Man mixed with Robocop, even though his armour is just plates and he’s still bending his own joints. Weird.

The Praetorians can’t cut through Beskar now, even though they did last episode.

The Tie Bombers and Interceptors took out the cruiser. Where’d they go after that? The Mandalorians would be sitting ducks after the ship was downed.

There’s plenty of flare and nice action shots, but it was a failure of a finale in my opinion. Nothing really worthy of new theories or anything impactful at all happened. Disappointing after the finale of Season 2.

yup! Gideon having super strength made zero sense! predictable and repetitive, with lots of questions left....felt rushed too

I thought that the Gideon suit was a combination of the first Dark Trooper and a suit that fit into him. Gideon became a Dark Trooper from a strength perspective. The sounds were specifically there to remind the audience that the Dark Trooper suit is powering some of his movement...or I should say he's powering them with the help of the Dark Trooper tech. Might be wrong, but that's my take on it.
