questions: since you are one of the very few (if indeed there are any others) who have done a build of ALMOST every cool version of Fett there is to do...
1) which one was the hardest?
2) which one was the most rewarding?
3) which one would you choose to take with you to live on a deserted island if you could only take one? (i.e. which one do you love the most?)
Also...
4) what are visiting hours of your museum?
Wow, these are tough questions. Can I instead choose one of my children? Just kidding, but yes it is hard to answer. Let me share simple thoughts on each one and answer the above. I'll share these in the order I built them:
1. ROTJ Fett - This was my original attempt so he's special. Despite being special, he wasn't good enough so he's had a lot of stuff replaced. My first attempt was all rattle cans and I much prefer the finished look of airbrush. He's had the helmet replaced once, then the ears replaced with metal ones. He now has the Minute lineage armor and the gauntlets were completely repainted. Oh, he also has the half shelter cape now. This one was done first because the colors of the ROTJ overall were my favorite, including the crayola backpack. It's probably the most rewarding considering the journey started with it and has evolved to what I feel is a fairly accurate display. So he's the answer to #2
2. ESB Fett - The OG. This has my favorite helmet, which I've redone twice now. Most recently with the lineage bucket from minute. I'm currently upgrading the armor to the minute updated armor, will eventually upgrade the gauntlets to the same and I'm working a khaki half shelter into an upgraded cape. This wasn't the hardest or most rewarding but since it's the OG, maybe it's the one I take with me to a deserted island.
3. Mando S2 Repainted Armor - This one might have the most screen accurate pose but it certainly wasn't the hardest or most rewarding. I did enjoy figuring out the best technique for the topical damage under the paint. I ended up using stippled wood putty believe it or not. Way easier to use than bondo and since these don't troop, I wasn't worried about the wood putty chipping. I loved the return of Fett, the primary colors and the soft goods on this one but pretty standard, run of the mill build.
4. Supertrooper - I love this one because you don't see a lot of them. The all white is just so aesthetically pleasing. This one was honestly super easy to build without the burden of stencils or templates or layering of paint. I think this one might've been rattle cans and also the only one I put a clear coat on (shiny white seemed right). Again, super easy build, not the most rewarding but I love him
5A. Post-Sarlacc Fett - This is 5A because I surprised my wife by building two Fetts simultaneously while she thought I was just building "one more". She's a saint and clearly who I'd take to the island IF Ord allows me to bend the rules a bit. This one was pretty rewarding because of the combination of the stippled damage and the technique I used to get the ultra-damaged look. I took a large paint sponge and dry sponged on silver after I'd masked the larger silver areas and exposed them after the top color paint. If you're looking for ultra screen accuracy this one will fall short but it's one that I stare at the most because I feel like my approach really captured the damaged armor in a different and unique way from the show.
5B. Holiday Special Fett - I should call this my "I had replaced the flight suit on ESB Fett and had extra pieces of armor laying around Fett". This one might've been the most fun simply because I was able to be creative with the damage and color schemes and create my realistic interpretation of Holiday Fett. I've seen plenty that were more true to the source material but I still really dig my version.
6. PP2 - I think this is my favorite and probably the most challenging. The challenge is really getting the pieces of armor to be different but also flow naturally and accurate represent the source material. Having the high resolution photos of this one is a blessing and a curse. There's a lot of clarity around what it should look like so getting it accurate to the source material is crucial. I stumbled on success with the helmet as I made the green too green on the dome and cheeks and decided I'd mist it with the light blue ArchiveX paint. It gave it this impossible to replicate blue hue that was the genesis for the Kenner action figure having a blue helmet (at least that's what I think). I spent a ton of time on the color scheme for the armor and gauntlets as well with a ton of experimental misting. The flight suit was a Man of War Studios two piece that came all white and I dyed about five different times. Again, got lucky with the fourth dye job being too blue and the fifth being an attempt to bring it back to blue grey by dyeing it in a quick 10 minute bath of heavy pearl grey. I pulled it out of the dye, rinsed it and thought "yuck, too dark.". I threw it in the washer and dryer and when I opened the dryer door I knew I had nailed the color (better to be lucky than good, right?). I feel like this one is probably the most accurate when you look at the whole thing. After all that writing, this one might be the best of the bunch, couple that with the fact that Sandy actually follows me on Insta and commented on one of my posts and I'll declare this one my winner.
Special mention: 3D Action Figure Fett - By far...and I mean by a distance the most challenging single project I've ever taken on. 3D printing something of this size right out of the gate having zero 3D printing experience was crazy frustrating. I literally took my Creality printer out of the box, plugged it in and loaded the first foot 3D model and printed it...perfectly. The remaining 27 pieces and parts never went that smooth. I will say that it was 100% worth it to have it standing next to it's source material, the PP2...without paying the crazy markup for the Gentle Giant monument, which candidly I think is too glossy.
Thanks for attending my Boba Fett build Ted Talk
