ESB Flamethrower - A Boba Fett Builders Group Design Project

Hello folks!

I was chatting with @boba87fett the other day about the idea of attempting to nail down an as accurate as possible design for the ESB gauntlet flamethrower by inviting the whole community here on the forum to offer up any thoughts, ideas, opinions, and reference towards that goal. It seems that there have been many replicas produced over the years that have involved a fair bit of artistic license due to the somewhat limited reference available and thus the details have varied considerably. I thought it might be cool to get everyone here to participate in the process of refining the design to be as accurate as we can get and reach some sort of consensus on what this thing really looks like. Once we have a design we can all agree on (people on the internet are known for agreeing on things, right?) we could look at having a run of metal replicas produced for us all to enjoy.

I would be happy to offer up my 3D modeling skills to iterate our collective design as it develops with people's input. I could also actually machine some metal prototype pieces when we get close to nailing down the details to see how things look when they are realized physically and further the comparisons and design refinement if needed. At the end of the design process, I can forward all the drawings/models to whomever we find to produce the actual run.

So what do people think? Is anyone interested in participating in such a project? I'd love to hear your thoughts. All contributors are welcome!

If we get some people on board, I can quickly throw together a rough first pass 3D model of the basic forms of this thing that we can start picking apart and refining. (y)

Cool idea , I can't recall ever finding 3d files for the flame thrower . Do you model for fun or for a living ?

But seriously folks, I am a drafter by day, so I do unexciting modeling and design work for a living but also like to do more creative modeling and design work for fun!

I'm curious if the C3-P0 costume and Fett's flamethrower share any components...

Hear me out. C3-P0 and the Supertrooper parts were made in the same room. You can see Fett lids on the window sill in the photo below.

Great idea. I'm in! I've been obsessing over this part for the last 6 weeks. Just finished the one that came with my gauntlet kit. I hardware bashed some metal parts for it but they are just stand-ins until I can get some parts that are more accurate.

I contacted MonCal props for the old IOA flamethrower and they were going to make one for me, but still waiting for word from the machinist. If you are not familiar with the IOA flamethrower, its closer than any other verison I've seen as a kit. But as good as it is, it's still not good enough based on the photos we do have. So I think a group effort to do something better is a great idea.

Threepio parts is a good thought, but I'm not seeing anything there that's on the flamethrower.

Did you buy that box? It looks like one I saw on ebay. I've been looking through dental lots for a while now and there is a lot of awesome stuff just like you are showing, but so far not seen anything matching. It's a good place to keep looking, though. Only problem is it's hard to know actual dimensions of most of the unidentified vintage dental stuff.

yeah that's on eBay. I didn't bid on it, but some of that stuff looks pretty cool.

Interesting thought about the comparison to C-3PO parts, @boba87fett! They could have all been machined by the same folks with the same sort of approach, even if the pieces themselves differ. And dental tools are certainly another possibility, considering their use on other things in the films.

Thanks for the photo, @Ord Mantell! That is largely the layout I have in mind for the basic design, but the details could certainly change with interpretation.

What do you think people are using for reference to justify their artistic choices in creating the specific details they do? I see things that are copied on various maker's versions from other replicas which feel like they are replicating a replica rather than going straight back to the source reference material, if that makes sense. If you've got some decent reference images for different details found on this thing, please post them up!

We need to try to find this complete photo of the ESB Boba Fett taken at Selfridges in London AFTER filming ESB in 1980. I'd imagine there are more of the ESB costume as well. If we could see the left gauntlet, we might have a clearer view of the flamethrower.

This batch of photos was listed for sale in the set on EW Bank Auctions for 200 GBP to "bartguy38"as part of the Propmasters: The 30th Anniversary Auction on November 15th 2018. I've been trying to track down bartguy38, but could use help searching the internet for him.

Definitely parts off boushh and y- wing lids...

Hey Guys!
I would like to take part in this operation.
Started a scratchbuild from the WOL Templates the last weeks.
But to build something on a more acurate Basis would be awsome.
Please don't get me wrong I dont won't to debase Allens templates.
So if you guys need a helping hand in modeling or building please let me know.

I cannot contribute to this project as I have neither the skills, nor any resources, nor the knowledge needed. But I can give moral support!!!!! will follow this :)
Lol I second the support! I’m more of an SE Fett guy but be great if another piece of the puzzle on the ESB could be figured out to become a more accurate representation.
